The Orpington Literary Festival 2023 featured two Orpington in Letters events staged by local authors Richard Bowdery and Jerry Dowlen.

Literary Light Bites at the Croft Tea Room on Wednesday 17th May attracted a full house to hear a selection of poetry and prose recitals by members of the local community. The choice of poets and authors was wide-ranging, including  William Blake, John Donne, Rudyard Kipling, George Orwell and many others.

Literary Short Bites at Orpington Library on Thursday 18th May attracted another full room this time to hear nine literary items featuring the letters of the alphabet that spell the word O-R-P-I-N-G-T-O-N. Richard and Jerry presented O = The Book of Orpington (Dorothy Cox, 1982); R = Readers Digest magazine history; P = Penguin paperback books history; I = Henrik Ibsen playwright; N = Edith Nesbit novelist; G = Robert Graves poet; T = Mark Twain author and humorist; O = George Orwell novelist; N = Ogden Nash comic verse.
