Her much-admired novels have often contained dark and compelling themes, full of mystery and suspense. Notable ones are A Spell of Winter (a Gothic chiller, and first-ever winner of the Orange Prize, in 1996), The Siege (based on Leningrad during World War Two) and Exposure (a Cold War spy thriller). She has received posthumously in January 2018 the annual Forward Poetry Prize 2017. On behalf of her family her son was quoted saying: ‘Poetry was so important to my mother and I think it was important to all her work.’
