Our Cray Wanderers football history books
Cray Wanderers FC is featured in many of our books. WANDERING THROUGH THE CRAYS (2015) is a social history of St Mary Cray and the Crays seen from the perspective of London’s oldest football club the Cray Wanderers. Finding that we still had bundles of unpublished material in the Wands’ archives we then published THERE’S MORE TO SAY ABOUT CRAY (2017) featuring a range of football and social history since the football club first saw the light of day at Star Lane.
Five of our books focus on a specific decade of local football. The 1950s (and late 1940s) are featured in CRAYONS FROM MY SCRAPBOOK. The 1960s and 1970s are respectively covered in LET US SEE THE GOALS GO IN and WHERE HAVE ALL THE STARS GONE? The 1980s come under the title WHEN HARRY MET CRAY largely featuring Harry Richardson's fantastic two seasons that were followed by Alan Payne and Peter Gaydon each managing the club for the rest of the decade. The 1990s are featured in FLASH-BANG WALLOP. All these books are still in stock and although they prominently feature Cray Wanderers there is plentiful mention of other local non-League teams like Bromley and Dartford; also of Football League clubs in Kent and London.
Cray Wanderers (founded 1860) are the oldest association football club in London. Our archives are filled with so much fascinating history of the club that we have been able to publish books on specific themes. For example there are three books that survey the history and selected content of the Cray Wanderers match programme. These books are titled THE TRIBUTE PROGRAMMES, EXCITING DISCOVERIES and SHIRTS THAT STAND THE STRAIN. Another book AWAY-DAYS CRAY looks at selected places of interest where the Cray team has travelled to play. And in our book entitled KEN COLLISHAW GOALSCORING LEGEND we remember a terrific centre forward who played for the Wands in the 1950s and 1960s.
At the start of the new 2023/24 football season the Wands will be playing in the Isthmian Premier League and you can see their home matches at Hayes Lane, Bromley FC.
All of our books can be purchased at Cray Wanderers home matches or at The Croft Tea Room, 263 High Street, St Mary Cray or via e-mail enquire150@gmail.com.
